Tearoom Relay Colloquial
10 Mar 2025 -11 Mar 2025
VAC Hanoi
We are pleased to present TEAROOM RELAY - Colloquial and Against the Glass Wall, the 5th iteration of TEAROOM. Initiated by the Haegue Yang class from the Staedeschule in Frankfurt in 2021, this 5th edition of TEAROOM features a two-day program incorporating screenings, readings, listenings, and performances where artists poetically investigate questions of culture, language, and collectivity.
In the summer of 2022, at Städelschule Gasthof, the class of Haegue Yang turned their classroom into a tea room which hosted events, performances, meditations, concerts and talks. Given the transformation from the classroom to the Tearoom, the space became a prototype of the community for creation, conversation and presentation.
Previous iterations of TEAROOM were hosted at the Venice Biennale of Architecture (2021) and at the Delfina Foundation in London (2023).

Where Do The Fishes Go?, 3 mins
Description: The fishes are the metaphor for the people in the city during the shutdown due to coronavirus. I made the video in April 2020 when Ho Chi Minh City was in lockdown. This video transports viewers into a hallucinogenic vision of fish and whales swimming through scenes of a city emptied of human interaction. Accompanied by an otherworldly soundtrack, the video has a calming and poetic quality, but at the same time it is impossible to ignore environmental connotations of the natural world reclaiming man-made, urban spaces. This is part of the group exhibition ‘Tonight the Air is Warm’, curated by Tolla Duke Sloane, which brings together works by some of the leading Southeast Asian artists working within today’s contemporary art scene, Opening at London Bridge Gallery on Thursday the 25th of February 2021

Ephemeral Landmark, 2023, 3 mins
Description: Filmed Performance - supported by BFM Art Center Suzhou. China 2023 "Ephemeral Landmark" is a thought-provoking and visually captivating performance that delves into the profound impacts of rapid urbanisation on the Zhuihong Bridge Scenic Spot in Suzhou, China, centers around a site-specific performance art piece, the artist becomes an ephemeral landmark herself, standing amidst a colossal mound of rubble left behind by a demolished building. Her striking pose draws attention to the profound consequences of human activity on the environment, particularly in the context of extensive urbanization. Through her powerful gesture, she prompts viewers to reflect on the value of preserving our urban spaces. A central element of the performance is the use of green 'environmental netting,' a material commonly found on construction sites to protect the surrounding areas. By juxtaposing this protective netting with the destruction of the building, the artist raises questions about the complex relationship between human intervention and environmental safeguarding. The netting seems to shield the discarded debris, which may appear worthless at first glance, but harbors the invaluable memories of a once-thriving village reduced to ruins. As the artist's performance unfolds, the ancient pagoda in Chuihong Park stands majestically in the distance, serving as a reminder of the intricate interplay between human history and the architectural landscape. The juxtaposition of the old and the new, the demolished and the preserved, underscores the film's underlying message. (2)

Noon 2 from “The Encounter 2 (2024)”, 2024, 4 mins
Desciption: Returning to the Hanoi Children’s Palace after 17 years, the artist saw the whiteboards in the six classrooms of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and thought to himself: ‘How fitting it would be if Master Ryokan Taigu’s poems were written here.’ Standing in this place, where the atmosphere was both familiar and distant, the verses about children by Ryokan Taigu – a Monk and Teacher whom the artist admires – suddenly reverberated:
As I watch the children happily playing,
without realizing it,
My eyes fill with tears.
Quỳnh Đông
My Paradise, 2012, 14 mins
Desciption: "My Paradise" shows an intermediate world, a model world with real people. A model Dongs father created as an idea of an Asian paradise serves as the stage for the video. From conversations with her father, she learned about what he pictures in this paradise for himself and her mother; stories based on everyday life and Asian soap opera. The main characters in this video are Dongs parents. Five stories depict everyday life in paradise: Flowers are watered, chickens are fed, people are strolling and riding on flying horses. Dialogue is completely absent from the videos: only five pieces of music accompany the clips. Guitarist and composer Nicholas Erismann wrote new compositions for all five videos in the style of Vietnamese songs.
Vũ Hà Anh
Kho Bau, 2025, 3 mins
Desciption: Hà Anh just dropped her new self-produced, self-written, self-performed, self-directed and self-released music video on her youtube channel.
Síu Phạm
Fog Over the Summit and Storm Over the Plain, 2015, 38 mins
Desciption: On the mountaintop, in a distant part of an Asian land, a European-style amusement park is built to attract and entice crowds.
At the foot of the mountain, a farmer diligently works in the fields.
Amidst the farmer’s fields stands a one-room house, abandoned for years.
A European painter arrives and turns it into his studio.
